2DHM-A Course Description: This 3-day virtual course, Verifying and Troubleshooting 2D Hydraulic Models for Transportation Hydraulics (2DHM-A), is a live web training designed to introduce participants to the various data files utilized for SRH-2D input, as well as the files generated by SRH-Pre and the output files produced by SRH-2D.

This course is a supplementary course to the 2D Hydraulic Modeling for Transportation Hydraulics (2DHM) course. Attendees will gain familiarity with the different file formats, understand their specific uses, and learn how to interpret the various diagnostic messages provided by SRH-2D through the Surface-water Modeling System (SMS). Developed by Aquaveo, SMS functions as a graphical pre- and post-processor for numerous 2D modeling engines. Additionally, participants will discover how to effectively employ monitor lines within SRH-2D and leverage their output to verify model stability and steady-state convergence.

Additional information will be provided in a pre-course email with links to download the SMS software, training manuals, exercise data files, as well as a temporary SMS license code to enable the software during the training.

Course Format: This course is offered within a standard work week, consisting of three days of virtual sessions of 3 hours each. Participants will also be expected to complete two independent exercises outside of the live online sessions—one after Session 1 and before Session 2, and another after Session 2 and before Session 3. Each independent exercise is expected to take approximately 1 hour, but will depend on individual experience.

Intended Audience: The target audience for this course is engineers who have responsibility for, or desire to work with, the hydraulic analysis and design of highway river crossings. Course participants should have knowledge of the fundamentals of open channel flow hydraulics.

Agenda:
Day 1

  • Introduction
  • Lesson 1 - Model Verification
  • Independent Exercise 1 - Model Verification

Day 2

  • Lesson 2 - Data Flow in SRH-2D
  • Lesson 3 - Output Files and Diagnostics
  • Independent Exercise 2 - File Structure and Diagnostics

Day 3

  • Lesson 4 - Summary and Review
  • Wrap-up

PDHs: Each participant who successfully completes the course will earn 8 PDHs. To earn PDHs, participants will be required to attend and participate in each session, complete the modeling exercises, complete an ungraded assessment at the end of the course, and complete the feedback form at the end of the course. Certificates of completion that include PDHs will be provided to attendees once these requirements are met.

The IDOT Bridge Office has reviewed the proposed course agenda for 2DHM-A: Verifying & Troubleshooting 2D Hydraulic Models for Transportation Hydraulics and has confirmed that successful completion of this training will satisfy the minimum qualification requirement for SRH-2D model terrain development training with various data sources.
