Course Description: This  course will provide training in the inspection of ancillary structures, such as structural supports for highway signs, luminaries, and traffic signals. In conjunction with NHI-130087A, it provides the needed training for a field inspector to understand the critical items that need to be reviewed in the field and documented during the inspection.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of ancillary structures inspection
  • Identify best practices associated with an effective ancillary structures inspection program
  • Identify general defects common to ancillary structures
  • Evaluate the condition of ancillary structures and their elements
  • Document inspection observations using standard methods
  • Relate identified best practices to your Agency's ancillary structure inspection program
Who should take this course? The target audience for this course includes Federal, State, local highway agency employees and consultants involved in inspecting ancillary highway structures or in inspection program management and leadership positions. This course is developed for participants without an in-depth engineering background. However, more knowledgeable persons can attend and will add value to the overall effectiveness of the training through their active participation.
